Before there was Google there was my father. As a child, he read encyclopedias and can still recite every volume verbatim back to you. If you are lost on the highway or just need a good ice cream parlor in Oahu or Timbuktu, my father is the guy to call for instantaneous advice.
Though he probably wouldn’t admit it, his wisdom far exceeds his factual knowledge. Here are a few wise things I’ve learned from him over the years
Nothing is impossible or too fanciful for the determined mind
When he was a teen, my dad once drove from Michigan to Florida (about 1200 miles/1931 km) just to get oranges.
Be generous with your talents
I’ve been especially inspired by his decade long volunteer project helping the working poor make the most of their tax situation. In his time with the project, he has managed to get these hard working people about $750,000 dollars in refunds.
There is humor in everything
My dad can find a joke for just about any occasion. His funeral repertoire is particularly good.
Be reliable
I didn’t own an alarm clock until college. Every morning from seventh to twelfth grade, my dad would wake me up at 5:30am, make me breakfast (and lunch) and drive me to swim practice. I was never late. I never missed a practice.
I feel so lucky to be my father’s daughter and am thankful for all the wisdom he has shared with me. Happy Father’s Day!
